The first day of Jets minicamp had a bubble of excitement surrounding it. Most of it was due to Le'Veon Bell being in the building, but it was the first time every Jets player on offense and defense could compete together this offseason.

But as team drills got underway, it was the defense that was winning.

Gregg Williams' aggressive defense was showcased on Day 1, as solid coverage and turnovers were created in the non-contact drills. And a couple of those turnovers came from QB Sam Darnold, who wasn't too pleased with his performance.

Head coach Adam Gase is running his own offense this season, and it's too early for his players to have it down like the back of their hands. But it's only the first day of minicamp, so it's no surprise there were some hiccups.

Gase just wants to see his players letting that mistake go and moving on to the next play, especially in Darnold's case.

"There's a couple times where he throws an interception and I'm not happy about it, he wasn't happy about it, and not letting it carry over," Gase said. "Just being able to reset, start over, and go to the next play. Those little, tiny things it's all valuable. It's tough against Gregg's defense. You're getting multiple looks, day in and day out and it's not slowing down."

As Darnold made his mistakes under center, Gase noted raising his voice at the sophomore quarterback for the first time. And instead of reacting negatively, it was a breath of fresh air for Darnold.

"Yeah you can say whatever you want to him, he's great about that," Gase explained. "I think he likes it better when you're a little aggressive with him. So I think the first time that I actually raised my voice, he was like 'About time you started getting on me a little bit.'"

A big upside of hiring Gase as the Jets' new leader on the sideline is the fact that he is a "quarterback guru." After his rookie season, the Jets are confident they have their franchise quarterback, and his development is crucial to their success for years to come.

Gase is tasked with tapping all of Darnold's potential, and that will come as the minicamp and OTAs continue. For now, though, Gase is still learning on the fly how to coach Darnold, and realize his strengths and weaknesses. And though it wasn't the first day of minicamp he wanted to see out of his offense, Gase did see one strength of Darnold's during the first play of those team drills.

The ability to adjust on the fly -- one of the biggest qualities a successful quarterback can possess.

"The first play of the team period is a great example. He's eyes go to the right spot, Robby [Anderson] doesn't run the right route and somehow he still completes it. That's not his fault. He still completed it, but that's like one of those things that isn't a problem until it's a problem."
