UConn redshirt freshman Jana El Alfy suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while playing with the Egyptian national team in the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup and will miss the entire 2023-24 season.
The school announced that she will undergo surgery later this week.
El Alfy, listed as a center at 6-foot-5, suffered the injury while playing against Italy on Sunday. Prior to exiting, El Alfy was leading the tournament with 21.4 points per game.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, El Alfy had been playing in her fourth FIBA tournament, as her father Ehab El Alfy, is the head coach of the Egyptian national team.
She enrolled at UConn and joined the team last January, but did not play in any games.
