Tom Brady applied for the "Tom Terrific" copyright this spring and later said it was all a mixup. Still, the application reached a decision-maker recently. And it was denied.

There is only one Tom Terrific, and the ruling made that clear.

"Although Tom Seaver is not connected with the goods provided by applicant under the applied-for mark, Tom Seaver is so well-known that consumers would presume a connection," the ruling stated. :As such, the applied-for mark TOM TERRIFIC is refused because it identifies a name of a particular living individual whose written consent to register is not of record."

Speaking in early-June, Brady said he doesn't like the 'Tom Terrific' nickname some have given him, so he was trying to copyright it in order to prevent other people from using it.

"Lesson learned," Brady said at the time, according to Albert Breer of MMQB.

After news of Brady's attempt to copyright Seaver's nickname broke, Mets fans planned to gather at Upper East Side restaurant Sojourn for a "Boston T.B." Party, where they were to dump jerseys and memorabilia of Brady into garbage bags filled with beans.

Seaver, 74, suffers from dementia and retired from public life earlier this year. The Mets recently unveiled their plans to build a statue for him at Citi Field.
