FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Two days after he limped off the field with an apparent foot injury, there was no indication that new Jets receiver Jamison Crowder had ever been hurt at all.
That was great news for the Jets, to see the 5-foot-9, 177-pound slot receiver running all over the field on Wednesday, contributing to a big day for the Jets offense. It also had to be a huge relief after getting a scare on Monday when the guy who figures to be their top receiver had to be sent for an MRI.
Development for the Jets, who had to be a little bit scared on Monday when a guy who figures to be their top receiver had to be sent for an MRI.
"It was just something that needed to get checked out, but I was good," Crowder said. "I was happy to be back out there today."
Here are a few more takeaways from the Jets practice on Wednesday morning:
Huge day for offense
Sam Darnold, in particular, seemed to have one of his finest days of training camp. He appeared to pick apart a defense that was plagued by penalties, and he had a little trouble leading the team to touchdowns during the two-minute drills.
Overall, he was 12-for-15 in team drills. But he had one play in particular that seemed to really impress his coach, where he rolled out toward the sideline and looked like he was headed out of bounds. His dash for the sidelines caused CB Brian Poole to hesitate, and gave Darnold the opening at the last second to find Robby Anderson open for a first down.
"When he plays like that," Anderson said, "I don't think there is a ceiling (for this offense). The sky's the limit."
Where are the red pinnies?
One interesting note at Jets camp this summer: Darnold and the rest of the quarterbacks, do not wear red jerseys - traditional attire for quarterbacks around the NFL, to win their teammates not to hit them. Gase said that's something he picked up in Denver where Peyton Manning hates wearing red jerseys.
So, does he trust his offense of lineman, in the summer heat, to really remember not to hit the quarterback?
"Yes" he said. "This group? Yes."
Gase not worried about kicking troubles
Kicker Chandler Catanzaro has not had a good camp, and had another couple of misses during practice on Wednesday. But Gase does not seem worried, though, and said he has no plans to bring in another kicker for competition.
He called Catanzaro "an experienced guy who's had success." There's always time to find a kicker, of course, so Catanzaro's fate likely won't be determined until the preseason games.
Jets have to wait on Marcus Maye
Maye remains on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list as he continues recover from shoulder surgery, and it sounds like he'll be there for a while. Gase said he's progressing and trying his best to recover faster, but there's not much he can do. He just needs to let his body heal.
"It's just going to be day to day. There's nothing he can do to speed up the process," Gase said. "He's working extremely hard. He's dying to get out there. He knows it's out of his control."
