Quinnen Williams is returning to practice Wednesday

"We'll slowly work him back in, we're just trying to be smart with him," Gase said about Williams, who has been out due to a calf injury. "We don't want to have any setbacks with him. When you have a big guy with any kind of soft tissue thing."

Gase added that Williams first felt the calf issue during the first day of OTAs and that they have been going slow with him to be precautionary.

What's the status of the GM search?

Asked about the five requests the Jets reportedly have out to prospective GM candidates, Gase said he wouldn't comment at this stage of the process.

"There will be a time and a place to talk about all this. But for me to comment on any of that stuff? It's just not the right time and place.

Asked when the process would officially begin, Gase referred back to his comments from a few seconds prior about how now isn't the time to comment. "Copy and paste" those comments, he said.

The progress of Marcus Maye after injury-plagued 2018

"We're being cautious," Gase said. "We do not want to have a setback with him. We're being very careful with what we do, because he doesn't have anything to protect him. ... we're just trying to be smart with that progression.

Gase noted that once the team gets into training camp that Maye -- who is "probably ahead of schedule" will be let loose.

The Jets' offense is a 'chameleon'

"This offense is a chameleon. It can blow up to a gazillion things. It can be minimized. It just all depends on what our players can handle, what we can do, what the quarterback is feeling -- what he likes. The longer we go, the bigger we'll get it."
