Giants head coach Joe Judge joined the Moose and Maggie show on WFAN on Tuesday to talk about the Markus Golden situation (click here for more), the potential logjam with Andrew Thomas and Nate Solder, the Nick Saban connection, and more.
Here are the takeaways...
On how left tackles Andrew Thomas and Nate Solder will fit
"We're gonna play the best five guys, period. And at this point there's no depth charts that are established. We have a lot of talented guys (and) we're gonna let training camp sort that out for us. Whether it's guys playing guard or center, whether it's left or right tackle, we're gonna find the best pieces for our team to have success. The only way to do that is to put 'em on the grass, let them compete, Let 'em figure it out and it'll sort out itself. ... everyone is gonna have an equal chance to compete. We're telling the players that, and it's 100 percent true."
On the futures of Evan Engram and Jabrill Peppers
"I'm very excited about working with both players. Engram, Peppers -- both these guys bring a lot of energy to our program. I can't wait to see them on the field competing with the other guys on our team and then eventually against opponents. I'm not gonna comment on contracts. ... we're having a lot of talks about internal issues at his point, and that's kind of on the docket that we're gonna sort out over the next few days."
On what he learned from Nick Saban and Bill Belichick
"The absolute attention to detail. Being thorough, being prepared, and making sure that everything is accounted for. You can deal with a lot of things -- I don't want to deal with surprises. So to me it's over-prepare, but make sure everything is accounted for so that when something comes up we have an answer for it. And that's important. ... I'd say overall, the level of being prepared and how to put your players in the right position."
On the defensive versatility he wants the Giants to have
"In our scheme, we're gonna have a lot of movement week by week, whether it's by matchup or by how certain teams play. I think right now, the premium we would really put on versatility is being met across the board (for) all of our players. And that's something we want to not just preach, but we have to practice that. And we have to make sure we find the right guys who have the ability to do that."
