Steve Cohen asks ‘would there be anything left to talk about’ if he brought back Mets’ black jerseys

Even with free agency underway and the Mets still searching for a new general manager, one of the hottest topics around the team continues to be whether or not the team should bring back the polarizing black jerseys worn from 1998-2011.

Owner Steve Cohen has mentioned the jerseys multiple times since his purchase of the team closed, and he made another comment on Saturday, giving a (semi) sarcastic reply to a tweet about the jerseys.

“If I brought back the black jerseys would there be anything left to talk about,” Cohen tweeted.

A fair question.

Cohen has previously joked that the decision on whether or not to bring back the black jerseys was one of his most important duties as the team’s new owner, speaking about them in an interview with SNY’s Steve Gelbs on Mets Hot Stove.

"There's lots of discussion on these black jerseys," Cohen told Gelbs. "Seems like there are people who are fervent who want it, and then people who actually don't want it. I think it's probably more that people want it than don't want it.

"I haven't talked to the players about it. I want to make sure they would be into that. And maybe we do it on a night every once in a while or something, just to shake it up."

Players like Pete Alonso and Marcus Stroman have previously voiced their support of the alternate uniforms, and while many fans have been wanting to see them return for years, others want them to remain out of the team's current look.

The way Cohen has repeatedly spoken about them, it’s fair to think he may be teasing an eventual return.
