Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred and Players' Association executive director Tony Clark have met personally in Arizona, restarting talks to begin the season, a person with direct knowledge of the conversation told SNY.
The conversation came at some point after Manfred said on ESPN Monday night that he was "not confident" that the season would be played.
As SNY reported Monday, those comments were intended to jump-start the process, which had stalled. The sides have now re-engaged.
In addition to reaching a new agreement with the union, Manfred is working to keep his coalition of owners together. As many as 6-8 owners are wavering on the season, or would prefer not to play. The commissioner's job now is to reach a deal with Clark that he can sell to his own constituency.
All along, the industry expectation has been that that will happen.
