Former No. 2 overall pick Hasheem Thabeet has been participating in informal scrimmages with some of the Knicks in New York City this week and is expected to be with the club for at least the next few days, per SNY sources.

New York currently has 19 players under contract -- one fewer than the maximum of 20 for training camp. So they have room to add Thabeet, a 7-foot-3 center, to their training camp roster if they choose.

Thabeet has worked out for several teams recently and is expected work out again for the Milwaukee Bucks, SNY sources confirm.

Amico Hoops first reported Thabeet's planned workout with Milwaukee.

Thabeet was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. He last played in the NBA in 2013-14. Thabeet was in a photo posted by the Knicks that showed him with a group of players at Syvlia's restaurant in Harlem.

League sources said Thabeet had been participating in the informal scrimmages recently and planned to do so for the next few days.  The Knicks' centers include Mitchell Robinson, Bobby Portis and Taj Gibson, so they may have a need for another big.

Thabeet, 32, has played for the Grizzlies, Rockets, Thunder, Pistons and Blazers. He last played with Detroit in training camp/preseason in 2014. He later played with the Pistons' G League team that year.

The Knicks' specific interest level in signing Thabeet to a training camp deal is unknown.

It's worth noting that there are other non-roster players participating in the Knicks' 5-on-5 scrimmages. But the Knicks probably wouldn't invite Thabeet to the scrimmages if they didn't have some level of interest in him.
