Saturday saw a positive development for the Mets as Pete Alonso took ground balls at Citi Field prior to the team's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The first baseman last played June 7 against the Braves when he suffered a bone bruise on his wrist after taking a 97 mph fastball from Charlie Morton.

Alonso is eligible to return to the team on June 18 after he was placed on the 10-day IL on June 9 -- retroactive to June 8.

This past week, Alonso expressed optimism about his return to the field coming sooner rather than later.

“I feel great," Alonso said while speaking at a charity event for the Alonso Foundation. "I know it looks bad with the splint, but I’m feeling excellent so I’m gonna get back out there as soon as possible. That’s the number one goal. I want to be out there ASAP."

Buck Showalter mentioned before Saturday's game that Alonso could return without a rehab stint.

"It’s something we’re considering," Showalter said when asked if Alonso will need a rehab start or two. "I hope not. He’s weighing in on it but the good thing about the 10-day IL is that there’s potential for not get as far away from it as you normally do. There’s a chance that that won’t have to happen.”

On the season, Alonso is hitting .231 with 22 home runs and a .832 OPS.
