Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced on Tuesday morning that the team will not be holding minicamp next week.
Prior to Saleh’s announcement, the Jets had been scheduled to hold a mandatory three-day camp from June 13-15.
Saleh’s reasoning for canceling minicamp is simple: With the Jets reporting for training camp a week earlier than most teams because they’re participating in the Aug. 3 Hall of Fame Game against the Cleveland Browns, it made sense for the players and coaching staff to have an extra week off before camp gets started.
"With the Hall of Fame Game, we’re reporting a week earlier than everybody else, and guys need to get away," Saleh said. "We’ve been here, they’ve put in a really good offseason, all the guys have since April, so April, May June. Just to give the guys the extra week to go take their break, because you need a week off, and then you’ve got to rev back up to get ready for the season.
"Having this extra week, taking the week off, then there’s just a lot of things that can mess up the flow, but we’ll pick it up and we’ll regain it once we get back for the Hall of Fame Game."
The exact report dates for 2023 Jets training camp haven’t officially been announced just yet. Last year, rookies reported on July 19 with veterans reporting one week later, so it’s fair to assume rookies will report about a week earlier this year.
