Rangers interested in trading for Ben Chiarot: report

Chiarot is set for unrestricted free agency after the season

The Rangers have interest in trading for Montreal Canadiens defenseman Ben Chiarot ahead of the deadline, reports Elliotte Friedman of TSN.

According to TSN, the St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, and Calgary Flames also have interest in Chiarot.

Potentially complicating matters is the fact that Chiarot was placed on IR on Sunday due to a lower-body injury, with the expectation being that he would be out roughly one week.

The 30-year-old has five goals and four assists in 44 games this season for the lowly Canadiens, who have the fewest points (23) in the NHL.

Chiarot is making $2.5 million this season (with a $3.5 million cap hit) and is set to be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The Rangers seem set with their top defense pairings of Adam Fox/Ryan Lindgren and Jacob Trouba/K'Andre Miller, but could be seeking additional depth, which Chiarot would provide.
