Second baseman Joe Panik, recently designated for assignment by San Francisco, will become a free agent at 1 p.m. on Friday if he goes unclaimed by another team, according to a major league source.
The Mets, who have lost Robinson Cano for a significant period due to a torn hamstring, will have some interest in Panik if he becomes a free agent.
The St. John's product, 28, is batting .235 this year, with a .627 OPS.
