The Giants started to lay a foundation for the next phase of their franchise in 2019.

The team is now in Daniel Jones' hands, but fellow rookies from last season in wide receiver Darius Slayton and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence also had strong starts to their respective careers.

Moving into 2020, the Giants will want to put together another strong rookie class to assist those guys, but there's free agency, too. Pro Football Focus said the Giants should swing big and go after Patriots safety Devin McCourty this offseason.

PFF tagged one big free agent each NFL team should go after in March, and here's why the analytics outlet said the veteran defensive back would be a fit for the Giants:

"The Giants' secondary was brutal across the board in 2019 -- the team ranked 30th in coverage grade, and their four most-played cornerbacks each failed to crack a coverage grade above 60.0. Safeties Jabrill Peppers and Julian Love were the best coverage defenders, but head coach Joe Judge will look to add former Patriots, and safety Devin McCourty is still a good one to get. Love has experience in the slot, so moving him there exclusively while bringing in the NFL's sixth highest-graded safety from 2019 wouldn't be a bad idea. Playing deep safety in 2019, McCourty allowed just one catch and notched four interceptions."

The Patriots' secondary in 2019 had a season to remember -- perhaps one of the best secondaries in the NFL's history. Stephon Gilmore is the first name that comes to mind, but McCourty was not far behind.

As a decade-long veteran, McCourty would bring a load of experience to a young secondary. Along with Peppers and Love, there's 2019 pick Deandre Baker, who had his fair share of struggles last season. McCourty could potentially help pave the wave for a brighter future in the Giants secondary. But he's spent his entire career with the Patriots. Would Judge be enough of an influence to bring the 32-year-old to Big Blue?

Despite his age, at the Patriots' end of season press conference, he said he wants to keep playing.

"I definitely see me playing football next year," McCourty said.

McCourty's last contract from 2015 was a five-year deal worth $47.5 million with $22 million guaranteed.
