Pete Alonso, Sean Manaea, and Luis Severino have rejected the Mets’ one-year qualifying offer.
This was the expected outcome for all three players.
Alonso is coming off back-to-back down offensive seasons, but he is still one of the best power bats available on the open market and should end up netting a big-money deal.
While extension talks didn’t progress last season, David Stearns has sounded interested in potentially bringing Alonso back if they are able to come to terms over the winter -- but priority No. 1 right now is clearly Juan Soto.
There’s also mutual interest in a potential reunion between Manaea and the Mets, but the 32-year-old southpaw has set has himself up very nicely to earn a multi-year deal.
Manaea turned himself into one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball down the stretch after making a midseason mechanical adjustment inspired by Braves ace Chris Sale, as he posted a 3.09 ERA over the final two months of the season.
He made 32 starts for just the second time and pitched a career-high 181.2 innings.
Severino finds himself in the same boat coming off a nice bounce back campaign. He stayed healthy and pitched to a 3.91 ERA across 182 innings of work after leaving the Yankees.
