Was Sunday's 10-5 loss at the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series Pete Alonso's last with the Mets?
"I don't know," said Alonso, whose 2-for-4 effort in New York's season-ending defeat included an RBI as he capped his heroic postseason. "I haven't really thought that far, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. But I love this place. This place has been really special. This is all I've known. It's just been a blessing and an honor. I've really enjoyed all my teammates that I've had.
"I've enjoyed the coaching staff. I've enjoyed just all of the people that have come through the door so many years. ... I can't thank everybody enough for not just the past six years but all of the people that helped get me to the big leagues and the minor-league system.
"There's so many coaches, teammates that I've had that have helped me get to this point. Over the past nine years, this is all I've known. I've loved every second of it."
Alonso, whose 30th birthday is Dec. 7, becomes a free agent after slashing .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBI over all 162 regular-season games of his sixth -- and perhaps final -- year in New York.
"Right now, I'm just kind of shell-shocked that the season's over," he said, "because once you get on this kind of postseason run, you kind of don't really think that it's going to end ever because we've overcome so much and we performed really well in big spots.
"You really kind of don't even have that in your mind. I never really had anything else other than winning the World Series with this group in my mind. I haven't really thought of that. I'm just kind of more in shell shock that that's over."
In the Mets' 13 playoff games this fall, Alonso produced a .273/.431/.568 slash line while adding five home runs and 11 RBI.
"Pressure is a privilege," Alonso said. "To be able to play in high-leverage games, important games, it's an honor and a blessing. As a young ballplayer, you dream of playing in high-intensity games and you want to play in those really fun environments. It's been a treat.
"It's been a blessing to be a Met. I'm honored to be a Met. It's just been so special. It's been really special."
