Mets 1B Pete Alonso's historic rookie campaign continued early during Monday's series-opening game against the Marlins at Citi Field in New York, where he etched his name into the franchise's record book next to former 3B David Wright.
On a 2-1 changeup from Miami LHP Caleb Smith in the bottom of the third inning, Alonso reached down for the low-and-outside pitch, pulling a one-out single to left field and becoming the Mets' single-season leader in total bases.
Alonso's 335 total bases with six-plus games left on the regular season edged Wright's mark of 334, which stood for the past decade and change after the former third baseman set the record in 2008.
The 24-year-old Alonso entered the first of the week's four-game series through Thursday with a .264/.364/.588 slash line, 115 RBI and 98 runs scored in 154 games. At 50 home runs, Alonso is two more long balls away from tying the MLB's rookie record, set by Yankees RF Aaron Judge (52) in 2017.
Alonso's debut year, which has been a constant from late March to late September, has made him the virtual lock for NL Rookie of the Year. For context with Alonso's latest milestone, Wright slashed .302/.390/.534 with 33 home runs, 124 RBI and 115 runs 160 games of his age-25 season.
