Noah Syndergaard pitched in what could be his last time in a Mets uniform during Sunday's season finale loss.
The 29-year-old righty coming off of Tommy John surgery started for the second time this season, allowing two earned runs in just one inning of work. Syndergaard is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and discussed his future with the team after the game.
"I try not to visualize that, it's kind of out of my control right now," Syndergaard said. "It would be a tough pill to swallow not wearing the Mets jersey next year. I'm just going to take things day by day and try not to focus too much on it."
Syndergaard pitched only two innings this season, letting up two earned runs on three hits to give him a 9.00 ERA with two strikeouts. He talked about overcoming his injury, and he's ready to get back to the "old Noah".
"I guess that was the goal from when I had my setback two or three months ago, just to come back healthy, and showcase I was healthy going into free agency," Syndergaard said. "I think now that I was able to come back after those two innings I can relax a little bit in terms of being a person that's just rehabbing, and being someone that's trying to pitch in meaningful baseball games. I think that'll definitely help on the mental side as well.
"Now it's just proven that I was healthy, now it's time to get back to the old Noah. I think anybody that knows me, knows that nobody's going to outwork me to get back to where I used to be."
Syndergaard said he has not had any talks with the front office regarding a qualifying offer or any other contract talk.
Over six big league season, he's accumulated a 47-31 record with a 3.32 ERA and 777 strikeouts over 718.0 IP.
