Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Sunday what was fairly obvious: Tylor Megill will make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.
Joining the rotation for the injured Paul Blackburn, Megill got the ball in the series opener against the Chicago White Sox on Friday and pitched well enough in a win to secure another start.
The 29-year-old went 5.1 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits, one walk and struck out six. He improved to 3-5 on the season and lowered his ERA to 4.82.
While the outing was encouraging for the right-hander, Megill has not been effective consistently this season and throughout his four-year career. In 69 games (62 starts), Megill is 20-21 with a 4.73 ERA (1.41 WHIP).
Regardless, the big righty will get another chance to prove himself against a solid Red Sox team at Citi Field, where he's historically been a much better pitcher.
Even if Megill performs well, it may not be enough to keep him around in the starting rotation as Blackburn is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday and could rejoin the team five or six days after that.
However, the Mets would love to see Megill put forth another strong outing as he tries to make a case to be a part of the team's future.
