New Mets reliever Trevor May: Valedictorian, gamer... DJ?

Right-hander could make a claim for Most Interesting Man in the Bullpen

With the signing of Trevor May, the Mets have added a hard-throwing right-hander who they hope will be a reliable member of their bullpen.

But there’s plenty more to the 31-year-old than meets the eye.

May, a former fourth-round draft pick of the Phillies in 2008, attended Kelso High School in southwestern Washington. Not only did he lead his team to a state title appearance in 2008, he graduated as class valedictorian.

He’s also an active gamer, and regularly streams on Twitch. He took part in MLB’s Players League earlier this year, in which representatives from each team played against each other in MLB The Show on Playstation.

He posted an admirable 18-11 record, but like any true gamer, was also prone to fits of rage when the stupid game glitches out and the players just don’t do what they’re supposed to.

After May’s introductory press conference, he hopped on to Twitch for an impromptu Q&A with fans. Someone asked if he disliked the Yankees now, and it appears May’s been preparing for the Subway Series his whole life.

“Bro, I was on the Twins,” May said, alluding to his former team’s consistent struggles against the Yankees in the playoffs. “Now? What do you mean? I grew up a Mariners fan. What do you mean?!”

But before he became a sensation on Twitch, May had another off-the-field interest. Just call him DJ Hey Beef.

"So, I haven't DJ'd since I got into Twitch," May said during his press conference on Thursday. "The whole thing with me is I find a hobby and I just, like, fall down that hole. So that was my early 20s phase until I turned about 26. Then I got into the live streaming thing, and that has been all-consuming because it kind of spread all kinds of ways outside of just being live all the time. But for DJ'ing, I went under the name DJ Hey Beef when I was 19. It's an inside joke that if I explained it, it still wouldn't make any sense."

May even got on the 1s and 2s as a Phillies minor leaguer in 2012, and you better believe there’s video of it.

If Players’ Weekend rolls around this season and May comes in from the bullpen with DJ HEY BEEF on the back of his jersey, now you’ll know why.
