The Mets announced on Friday evening that top pitching prospect Matt Allan will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in the coming weeks.
According to the team, Allan underwent a physical examination and an MRI that revealed the ligament tear earlier this week.
The Mets’ third-round pick in the 2019 MLB draft who was considered the top high school arm available at the time, Allan has quickly risen the ranks in the team’s farm system. According to MLB Pipeline, Allan is the team’s top pitching prospect and the team’s third ranked prospect overall.
Allan, 20, spent some time in Mets big-league camp this season before moving to minor-league camp, and he was feeling “dominant” heading into his first full pro season.
"Now being in minor league camp, I think I really feel -- I think a good way to say it is just dominant," Allan said in late April. "I think facing some of the big leaguers and 40-man guys and just generally older guys, to facing kind of my level, High-A guys, Double-A guys, I think honestly I just feel pretty dominant, and I'm looking to take that into the season."
