Kyler Murray may be ditching baseball for football, but Tim Tebow remains fully committed to reaching his goal of playing major league baseball.

The 31-year-old Mets prospect, who is expected to report to Port St. Lucie on Friday for Spring Training, was offered a chance to return to the gridiron and pursue a football career in the new Alliance of American Football League, according to Steve Spurrier.

The former South Carolina coach, who is head coach of the AAF's Orlando Apollos, told PFT Live on Tuesday that Tebow declined the offer as he continues to pursue his career in baseball.

"I don't blame him," Spurrier said. "Tim's got a chance to go to Major League Baseball. I think Tim's probably headed in the baseball direction. I don't blame him. If I were in his situation I'd probably do the same thing."

Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner, joined the Mets organization in the summer of 2016 and is expected to start this season in Triple-A Syracuse.

He earned a spot on the Double-A Eastern League All-Star team last season when he hit .273 with six home runs and 46 RBI in 84 games. His season was cut short, however, when he broke his hamate bone in his right hand.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen, who previously represented Tebow as his agent, sounded hopeful the former NFL quarterback could reach the majors this season with the Mets.

"He's a guy that is fueled by challenges and I think we're excited to get him back into camp," he said in January. "Hopefully after a trip to Syracuse he can prove to us and everybody in baseball that he can make an impact in the big leagues."
