The Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 12-7, on Monday afternoon as their spring training slate continued.
Here are the takeaways...
- David Peterson got the start and spun two hitless innings, with his only blemish a one-out walk in the second. His fastball topped out at 94 mph and he also broke off some nice sliders, including one to induce a swinging strikeout to end his second and final inning.
Overall, Peterson allowed no hits while walking one and striking out three. He threw 25 pitches.
Aside from Peterson, none of the pitchers the Mets used on Monday (as the team allowed 12 runs) are viewed as contenders for the Opening Day roster. That included Jose Chacin, who gave up five runs in the fifth inning. Chacin has never pitched above Double-A.
- Ronny Mauricio smoked a long two-run homer to right-center in the ninth inning. It was Mauricio's second homer in as many games. He went 1-for-2 overall.
- Francisco Alvarez, serving as the DH, struck out swinging his first time up and grounded out to first base in his second at-bat. The 21-year-old hit a rope to right field his third and final time up, but it was caught just shy of the warning track.
- Mark Vientos got the start at third base and reached on an infield single in his first at-bat. He struck out swinging his second time up on a 97 mph fastball. Vientos came to the plate in the fourth with the bases loaded and one out, working the count full before grounding into a 5-3 double play.
- Brett Baty lined an opposite-field single in the ninth. He finished 1-for-2.
- Alex Ramirez reached on an infield single in his first at-bat and struck out looking his second time up.
- Luis Guillorme had a nice game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. That included an RBI single in the first inning and a run-scoring double he laced into the gap in left-center in the fourth.
- Pete Alonso went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and a strikeout.
