The Mets blasted two homers on their way to a 4-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday at Citi Field.
Takeaways from the game
1) It was J.D. Davis and Pete Alonso that had the big flies in this one. Davis, who went 3-for-4 on the day, got the Mets on the board in the first inning, smashing his fourth homer of his career off Patrick Corbin to give New York a 2-0 lead. Alonso’s came in the bottom of the fourth inning, turning on a first-pitch fastball and sending it to the black in deep center field. That’s his fifth on the season.
2) Taijuan Walker was looking for a bounce-back start and he got just that in this one. He wanted to cut down his six walks from last time, and though he had three over his seven innings, he did strike out four and allow only three hits all day. He lowered his ERA to 2.14 on the year.
3) Miguel Castro got into a little trouble in the eighth inning when he came in for Walker, but he would get out of it after letting up two hits. He struck out the side.
4) Other Mets that collected at least one hit were Francisco Lindor, Michael Conforto, James McCann and Jonathan Villar.
5) After Saturday night's defensive blunders, the Mets were solid in the field in this one. A solid relay from Michael Conforto to Jonathan Villar to J.D. Davis gunned down Victor Robles trying for a triple. Albert Almora Jr. also saved two runs with a spectacular catch in deep center to end the top of the sixth. And Lindor went full extension on a hot shot to shortstop to collect an out. Finally, to end the game, Alonso made a sweet diving play and flip to Edwin Diaz to hang on to the shutout.
6) The Mets stay above .500 with their record moving to 9-8 on the season.
