It was a thriller in Philadelphia this afternoon, but the Mets came out on the losing end, 3-2, as the Phillies took the series. >> Box score
Six things to know about Wednesday's game...
1) Zack Wheeler started off the day cruising out in Philadelphia, but the long ball got to him later in the game. Holding on to a 1-0 deficit, Scott Kingery launched an opposite field homer in the fifth inning for his second of the series to make it 2-0. Then, one inning later, Cesar Hernandez took Wheeler deep as well to push the lead to three. Overall, Wheeler finished the day allowing three earned on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks as well.
2) On the other hand, Jake Arrieta was strong for the Phils. He went eight innings, and was going for the complete game until Pete Alonso hit a comebacker to the mound that bounced off Arrieta which allowed him to reach first. The righthy came out at that point, allowing just one run on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
3) The Mets made things interesting in the top of the ninth when they found bases loaded with two outs after bringing one run home to cut the lead to 3-2. Keon Broxton came to the plate against Hector Neris and managed to work a 3-2 count. But Broxton swung through the Neris 94 mph heater down the middle to end the game.
3) Conforto was the only Met to hit something hard off Arrieta, and it carried over the right field fence. Frankly, it was a good pitch from Arrieta, but Conforto pulled his hands inside and caught all barrel for his fifth homer of the year and second in two games. He had a good chance to bring the Mets back in the ninth, but struck out with runners on first and second and no outs. He was still 2-for-4 on the day.
4) Jeff McNeil continues to hit, collecting two hits in four at-bats on the day. His season average is up to .424 now.
5) Two Mets were hit in the top of the ninth in Robinson Cano and Wilson Ramos, who pinch-hit for Travis d'Arnaud. Cano's didn't look too serious after taking a hit in the small of his back. Ramos, though, was shaken up after getting hit right above the elbow. He managed to walk to first base, but was reeling in pain after eating that 95 mph fastball.
