Five things to know from Tuesday's game...
1) Pete Alonso blasted the Mets into a quick 3-0 lead in the blink of an eye. After Jeff McNeil doubled to start the game, J.D. Davis blooped a single to left, setting up Alonso in a big spot. As he's done all season long, the rookie answered the call, slamming a three-run shot to left-center field. Alonso's 22nd home run of the season gave Jason Vargas three runs to work with before taking the mound.
2) The Mets started another rally in the third. With one away, Alonso and Todd Frazier drew back-to-back walks. Michael Conforto then stung a single to right-center, scoring Alonso and putting the Mets up 4-0. Wilson Ramos kept the wheels turning with an RBI single of his own, pushing the lead to 5-0. Adeiny Hechavarria added the sixth and final run of the inning with a single, giving Vargas plenty of room to work with.
3) Vargas kept the Yankees at bay for the first two innings, but they built a rally of their own in the third, loading the bases with nobody out. Gleyber Torres grounded a single to left, putting the Yankees on the board and snapping Vargas' scoreless innings streak, which had reached 17 innings. Clint Frazier and Gio Urshela then added two runs on a pair of force outs at second. Vargas got out of the inning after allowing three earned.
4) The Mets bats responded quickly. After McNeil reached on an Urshela error, Davis skied an opposite-field two-run homer to put the Mets back up by five at 8-3. In the fifth inning, the Mets extended their lead to 9-3 on a Carlos Gomez solo shot, making it 9-3 Mets.
5) Vargas gave the Mets another quality outing, giving up three earned runs over six innings of work. All of the trouble for Vargas came in the third inning, but outside of the one shaky frame, he was very effective against the Yankees' potent lineup.
