Six things to know from Tuesday's game
1) Noah Syndergaard gave the Mets a second-consecutive quality start, but the run support just wasn't there for him early on. Syndergaard pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on 103 pitches. After the Mets did give him a lead in the sixth, he was noticeably unhappy when Mickey Callaway elected to pull him from the game in favor of Seth Lugo with two away in the seventh. He left the mound with a lead, but it wouldn't hold.
2) Lugo allowed a single to Evan Longoria to give the Giants first-and-third with two outs in the seventh inning. Brandon Belt then lined a ball over Michael Conforto's head in right. The tying run scored, but Longoria was gunned down at the plate, setting the score at 3-3 through six and a half innings. Lugo came back out to pitch the eighth inning, as he worked around a leadoff single to get through the inning unscathed.
3) Things unraveled for Robert Gsellman in the 10th inning. After allowing the first two batters to reach, Gsellman uncorked a wild pitch, followed by a two-run double by Stephen Vogt. A few batters later, Pablo Sandoval ripped a two-run double down the third-base line off of Hector Santiago. In total, Gsellman was tagged for five runs in one-third of an inning, as the Giants added six runs in the frame.
4) The Mets' bats came to life in the sixth inning. After Madison Bumgarner shut them down through five innings, Pete Alonso got back to his usual antics, slamming his 20th home run. His solo shot put the Mets on the board, making it 2-1 Giants in the bottom of the sixth inning. Later in the inning, Wilson Ramos pulled a Bumgarner pitch into the seats in left, giving the Mets a 3-2 lead. The Mets have now homered in 11-straight home games.
5) Edwin Diaz came into a tied ballgame in the ninth inning for the Mets. Diaz did allow a two-out single, but he struck out the side to keep the game tied.
6) The Mets welcomed Jeff McNeil back to the lineup on Tuesday, and he made his presence known right away with a first-inning single off of Bumgarner. McNeil was left stranded at second base on a JD Davis double-play ball.
