Five takeaways from Thursday's game
1) Noah Syndergaard had his start cut short thanks to an extensive rain delay. Syndergaard's night ended at 73 pitches as he unsurprisingly did not come back out to the mound for the seventh inning when play resumed at 11:10 p.m. Still, it was a productive outing for Syndergaard in the win. Over 6.0 innings, the righty allowed only two hits and retired the first 16 batters he faced. Syndergaard struck out five, including the first two batters he faced in the game to set the tone early.
2) The Mets defense certainly helped Syndergaard. In the fourth inning, J.D. Davis made a fantastic catch in left field. Greg Allen had Davis running while facing the stands on the warning track and Davis made an over the shoulder grab with his arm fully extended. In the sixth inning just after Syndergaard's first allowed hit, he teamed up with Pete Alonso for a big out. Allen hit a grounder that caused Alonso to dive to his right to make the play. He stopped the ball, but fumbled it. Upon picking it up, he made a quick throw to first base as Syndergaard covered for him. The play came with two men on base and ended the inning.
3) Todd Frazier had one of the few mistakes of the night for the Mets, which hindered his team's chances to capitalize on two errors from the Indians. On a chopper to the mound by Frazier, he advanced all the way to second base as pitcher Tyler Clippard tossed an ugly errant throw to first base. From there, Yasiel Puig corralled the ball and threw it 15 yards to the right of third base, despite Frazier holding at second. The error got Frazier to third. Juan Lagares hit a potential sacrifice fly to left field and Frazier attempted to tag and head home. Instead, he was gunned down to end the inning by Tyler Naquin.
4) Wilson Ramos can't stop hitting. Joe Panik singled and Michael Conforto hit a ground-rule double in the fourth inning, which was followed up by a Ramos double that drove both of them in.
5) While Syndergaard didn't return after the rain delay, the Mets' bullpen was just as good. Jeurys Familia continued his strong pitching of late, tossing a scoreless seventh inning while working around a walk. Paul Sewald had a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
