Five Takeaway's from Monday's game
1) Pete Alonso certainly has a flare for the dramatic. The Mets' rookie slugger, who had not homered since July 26, capped a three-run seventh inning by ripping a go-ahead, solo home run down the left field line that just got over the wall to give the Mets a 5-4 lead. Nine of Alonso's 34 home runs have come in late and close situations and 11 of them have broken a tie game. This one elicited a curtain call from the frenzied Citi Field faithful.
2) Alonso went back-to-back with Michael Conforto, who tied the game with a blast to right field. Conforto knocked in three of the five Mets' runs on the night. The right fielder gave the Mets an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run, opposite field single.
3) J.D. Davis set the tone for the seventh-inning rally with his 12th home run of the season to leadoff the inning. Davis entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Lockett and stayed in the game after he took over for Jeff McNeil, who left early with a calf cramp.
4) Lockett looked fine early, but struggled the second time through the Marlins' lineup. He allowed an RBI single to Harold Ramirez in the fourth and a home run to Bryan Holaday to lead off the fifth. He stayed in to get two more outs but also allowed two more singles before he was lifted for Robert Gsellman. The Mets reliever was unable to cleanup Lockett's mess, allowing a two-run double to former Met Curtis Granderson to complete a three-run fifth inning. Lockett finished with eight hits, two walks, four earned runs and four strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched.
5) Seth Lugo was clutch out of the bullpen for the Mets, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out two to lock down the save for the Mets after they had used Edwin Diaz earlier in the first game of the doubleheader.
