Five takeaways from Friday's game
1) In the top of the eighth inning, the Mets loaded the bases off of Phillies reliever Mike Morin, and Amed Rosario delivered in the clutch. His single up the middle to score two runs, putting the Mets up 3-1. After a pitching change, Todd Frazier hit a line-drive three run shot over the wall in left field, extending the Mets' lead to 6-1. The five-run outburst from the Mets broke a previously tied game wide open.
Then in the ninth, Michael Conforto blasted a two-run shot to right field, giving the Mets an 8-1 lead. After getting a couple of more runners on base, Frazier slammed his second three-run shot in as many innings, making it 10 runs for the Mets in the final two innings. He became the first Met to homer in both the eighth and ninth inning of the same game since David Wright against the Phillies in 2009.
2) Wilson Ramos extended his league-leading hitting streak to 23 games. In the seventh, Ramos tied the game as he came into the game with the bases loaded and his pinch-hit single scored JD Davis, who walked earlier in the inning.
3) Zack Wheeler limited the damage against the Mets in his six innings of work. The Phils didn't cross a run until the fifth inning, but did have seven hits off of him. He walked three batters and had four strikeouts as well. Phillies ace Aaron Nola helped make the contest a pitchers duel, too. He tossed 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and seven punch outs.
4) Conforto and Davis had outstanding defensive showings in the outfield. In the fifth inning, the Phillies did score, but the damage could've been much worse. Conforto made a forward diving catch on his play. Because he had to lay out for the grab on JT Realmuto's knock, Adam Haseley crossed home for the sacrifice run.
Davis' play also occurred in the fifth, ending the inning. Rhys Hopkins single on a line drive to left field. The ball bounced perfectly for Davis, who then gunned down Corey Dickerson at home in one swift motion. Rene Rivera made the tag behind the plate.
5) Edwin Diaz pitched another dazzling inning in the eighth, retiring the side one-two-three on just 10 pitches. He struck out Jean Segura and Cesar Hernandez to end the eighth. Chris Mazza allowed four runs in the ninth, but he did eventually end the game.
