Tons of positives came out of the Mets’ 8-3 win over the Houston Astros at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie on Tuesday.

Takeaways from the game

1) Jacob deGrom is in mid-season form, but what else is new? His fastball was pumping in at 100 mph multiple times and his slider, sitting around 92 mph with some coming in at 94, was crisp and had sharp movement. He did have one blip in his day – a solo homer to left field in the top of the third inning that it seemed the wind just carried out over the fence, right over Dom Smith’s glove. But other than that, deGrom struck out six and allowed one more hit other than the homer over 50 pitches.

2) Francisco Lindor’s first home run as a Met finally came when he blasted a ball over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning, a two-run shot that brought home Brandon Nimmo as well. It was about time the switch hitter took one over the wall and it won’t be the last. He finished his day 2-for-3 with two runs scored as well.

3) Pete Alonso had himself a day. The slugger totaled three hits in three at-bats, including a homer that towered over the left field fence. It was a high fastball that he turned on in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alonso is looking real good for the Mets, and they have to love that after an up-and-down 2020 campaign. He’s hitting .417 in spring after today’s big day.

4) Speaking of sending the ball over the wall, the guy that did it first for the Mets was once again Dom Smith, crushing a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to put New York up in their home park. Smith finished the day 1-for-3 and was hitting the ball hard in his other outs as well.

5) It was good to see Jeff McNeil barreling up the ball, too, going 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

6) After deGrom, Jeurys Familia got the ball. Though he ended up with the bases loaded in the fifth, he didn’t allow a run as he got out of his own jam with a Michael Brantley fly ball to center to end the inning. On the other hand, Dellin Betances continued to struggle, allowing two runs on two hits and a hit by pitch in the sixth. He has an inflated 13.50 ERA this spring.

7) Trevor May looked dialed in during his appearance, striking out three and walking one over his inning of work. Miguel Castro also tallied two strikeouts in his inning. Sam McWilliams finished it out in the ninth, getting one strikeout and one walk put on his stat line.
