Francisco Lindor had his best game as a Met, slugging a pair of homers and knocking in all five Mets runs in a 5-1 win over the Nationals in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Here are the takeaways…
- After collecting two hits in each of the last two games, the Mets equaled that total in the first two batters of the game, and got themselves an early lead in the process. After Jonathan Villar lashed a lead-off single to the opposite field, Lindor launched a ball over the left-center field fence to give the Mets a 2-0 advantage.
- Lindor added another RBI in the third inning with a single to score David Peterson, who reached after he was grazed on the leg by a pitch from Joe Ross. But he wasn’t done yet. The shortstop came to the plate with the score still 3-0 in the fifth and delivered another two-run homer, this time to right field, to give the Mets a 5-0 lead.
- Peterson cruised through three innings, then ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth before getting out of it, then finishing his outing with two outs in the fifth. Peterson allowed just two hits, both to Trea Turner. Turner’s fifth-inning double chased the left-hander from the game, and though Aaron Loup allowed Turner to score, he yielded no further damage in the fifth and the Mets led 5-1. Peterson also notched his first career hit with a double in the fifth.
- Miguel Castro got two outs in the sixth but left with runners on second and third, giving way to Seth Lugo. Lugo got Kyle Schwarber to ground out, then Trevor May pitched a scoreless seventh to seal the win.
