The Mets are adding even more outfield depth by signing former All-Star Matt Kemp to a minor-league deal, pending a physical. He'll initially report to Port St. Lucie.

Kemp was released by the Reds three weeks ago after Cincinnati acquired him from the Dodgers in December.

The 34-year-old, who was an All-Star just last season, was hitting .200 with one homer in 62 plate appearances with the Reds this season. Before he was released, he was placed on the injured list retroactive to April 22 with a broken rib.

The Mets' entire starting outfield is injured and have had to adjust on the fly over the last week-plus.

Michael Conforto has been out with a concussion but is hoping to return this weekend. Jeff McNeil is on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. Brandon Nimmo is also on the IL with a stiff neck. And any hope of Yoenis Cespedes returning from surgery on his heels this season dissipated after he had to undergo season-ending ankle surgery.

On Thursday, the Mets claimed Aaron Altherr off waivers from the Giants and added him to their 25-man roster on Friday. They called Rajai Davis up from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday -- and he promptly hit a late-inning home run. Carlos Gomez was called up from Syracuse on May 17, the same day they designated Keon Broxton for assignment.

And now Kemp is in the mix. If he can get healthy and find a semblance of his old form, he'd become a very interesting option. Last year he slashed .290/.338/.481 with 21 homers, 25 doubles and 85 RBI.
