The Mets added some pitching depth on Thursday, signing 33-year-old right-hander Dylan Covey to a one-year major league contract.
Over the span of five major league seasons, Covey has pitched for the White Sox, Red Sox, Dodgers, and most recently with the Phillies organization. He’s worked as both a starter and reliever over the course of his career, making 100 appearances (46 starts) with a 6.18 career ERA and 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
Covey did not appear in the majors last season as he was recovering from a right shoulder strain. In 18 minor league appearances, Covey pitched to a 2.66 ERA with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 20.1 innings.
Originally a fourth-round pick of the Oakland A’s in the 2013 MLB Draft, Covey could compete for a spot in the bullpen, and he gives the Mets some needed depth with players like Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, and Luis Severino hitting free agency.
