The Mets officially introduced first-round pick Brett Baty on Saturday afternoon after the first-round pick signed his contract with the team.
"He is a player with tremendous power," said Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen. "This was a player that's important to us, this is a player that we have a lot to look forward to. We feel like he can make an impact with his bat and we feel like he can be a player that's a part of our future sooner rather than later.
"I can't say enough about our scouting staff. We saw Brett early and often this spring, and virtually every important person from a scouting standpoint saw Brett play ... A lot of people spent a lot of time in getting this selection right."
MLB.com's Anthony DiComo reports that the Mets were able to come to terms with Baty below his slotted first-round money (around $4.4 million), saving money to hopefully use to entice third-round pick Matthew Allan to sign as well.
MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis has reported that the value of the contract is $3.9 million, close to $500,000 below the slotted price.
"This is just a great organization to be a part of, and I'm so happy that I'm a Met," Baty said. "New York is an amazing place and an amazing city. It's just an amazing atmosphere and I can't wait to get up here."
Baty took batting practice with the Mets at Citi Field on Saturday, where he got to the opportunity to talk to some of his future teammates, including Pete Alonso.
"It was just an amazing feeling," said Baty. "It was an amazing atmosphere out there on the field, and getting to talk to Pete Alonso was pretty cool. He's an awesome guy and I'm just so happy right now."

A 19-year-old from Spicewood, Texas, Baty is listed at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds. He has the ability to play both corner infield positions as well as the outfield, though Van Wagenen did refer to him as a third baseman on Saturday.
