MLB
It was a tumultuous week for the Mets. Jacob deGrom represented the team in Tuesday's All-Star Game, pitching one inning and allowing a home run. After deGrom's agent suggested Monday that the Mets should either extend or trade him, the Mets' ace said he loves playing in New York. Whether deGrom, Zack Wheeler or any other starting pitcher will be traded has yet to be seen, but on Saturday, the Mets managed to move one of their key pieces by dealing Jeurys Familia to the Athletics for two prospects and international slot money. One of the prospects, right-hander Bobby Wahl, was an elite reliever in Oakland's system.
Over the weekend, the Mets were hit by another injury wave. Yoenis Cespedes homered in his return from the disabled list Friday, but dropped a bombshell after the game when he revealed that he has two calcified heels and is weighing surgery that would keep him out for 8-10 months. The outfielder will see a foot specialist and undergo an MRI this week, and for their part, the Mets have insisted that surgery is a "last resort" option. On Sunday, the Mets placed the recently-reinstated Noah Syndergaard back on the disabled list for -- and this is true -- contracting an infection from children. Even Tim Tebow wasn't safe, as the former Heisman winner hit the DL on Saturday due to a right hand/wrist injury. Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier continue to work their way back to full health, but they -- along with the Mets' other free agent signings in Jason Vargas, Anthony Swarzak and Jose Reyes -- are having arguably the worst seasons of their Major League careers.
After defeating the Yankees on Friday, the Mets dropped Saturday's game -- though they nearly completed a comeback in the ninth inning. Sunday's Subway Series finale was rained out and will be made up on Aug. 13.
The Yankees sent four players to the All-Star Game, including Aaron Judge, who homered, and Luis Severino, who pitched a scoreless inning. On Thursday night, the Yankees activated Gary Sanchez from the DL, with All-Star Gleyber Torres tentatively set to return this Wednesday. The Bombers missed out on Manny Machado but remain in the hunt for pitching help, although prices remain high. If the Yankees were inclined to sell instead of simply buy, one candidate to move could be Sonny Gray, who some believe would thrive for a small-market team. Top prospect Justus Sheffield is approaching his promotion to the Major Leagues. Finally, New York led the league in moves involving pitchers named Domingo last week, sending down Domingo German, calling up Domingo Acevedo and sending down Domingo Acevedo.
The Yankees stranded a season-high 14 baserunners in Friday's loss to the Mets before weathering Aroldis Chapman's blowup to notch their first win of the second half on Saturday. Following Sunday's rainout, the Bombers open a series in Tampa Bay tonight.
NFL
The Jets and Giants are set to open training camp this week. Fans will have four opportunities to watch Sam Darnold and company as they prepare for the 2018 season. Gang Green's receiving corps is somewhat in limbo after the team released the oft-injured Devin Smith while ArDarius Stewart was reportedly hit with a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drugs policy. On Wednesday, eight-year Jet Darrelle Revis announced his retirement. Later in the week, Giants owner Steve Tisch criticized President Trump and said the Giants will not punish players who choose to kneel during the National Anthem. Finally, Saquon Barkley officially signed his four-year, $31.2 million contract -- which included a whopping $20.76 million signing bonus -- on Sunday. Having already bought his parents a new house, the No. 2 overall pick may be looking to acquire a sweet pad for himself; Barkley was spotted checking out a $13 million condo in lower Manhattan.
NBA
The NBA Summer League gave the Knicks a chance to evaluate (among others) Kevin Knox and Mitchell Robinson, who stole the show. Knox's performance didn't surprise his father, Kevin Knox Sr., who praised his son's mature play. The Knicks were named the most valuable franchise in basketball by Forbes, but that didn't stop Michael Beasley from jumping ship to join LeBron James and the Lakers. On Friday, the Nets acquired Jared Dudley and a 2021 second-round pick from the Suns in exchange for Darrell Arthur. Both New York-area teams are looking ahead to summer 2019, when Kawhi Leonard is projected to highlight a stacked free-agent class. The Knicks and Nets could both contend for Leonard's services.
NHL
Rangers head coach David Quinn returned from Sweden, where he met Henrik Lundqvist, Mika Zibanejad and Jesper Fast in his efforts to set the tone for the upcoming season. Kevin Shattenkirk, who was married last week, reiterated the importance of establishing a winning culture. New York signed John Gilmour and four other players and avoided arbitration with Jimmy Vesey, inking the 25-year-old to a two-year deal worth $4.55 million. David Oliver, Greg Brown and Lindy Ruff will join Quinn on the Rangers' coaching staff. The Islanders also made some moves last week, re-signing Kyle Burroughs, Devon Toews and Ryan Pulock and adding John Gruden as an assistant coach. SNY's Chris Botta explores which free agents the Isles could add to improve their defense this season.
