Sam Haggerty was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 24th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of New Mexico. Haggerty was traded from the Indians organization along with right handed pitcher Walker Lockett to the Mets for catcher Kevin Plawecki.

Haggerty was recently promoted to Triple-A Syracuse and in 12 games he has hit .310 with a .383 on-base percentage and 4 stolen bases.

This year he has spent time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field and right field. When I took my trip to Syracuse on Thursday, I sat down with Haggerty to talk about his upbringing in the game, his feelings about being traded, and to where he is now.

On his family life growing up and how he got into baseball

"Baseball was always in my family. Both of my grandfathers played, my father played college baseball and I had an older brother that played. It just seemed like something I should do."

On if baseball came naturally to him

"I mean, I guess. I played a lot of sports growing up but baseball always seemed to be the one the family really cared about and I enjoyed it a lot."

On choosing the University of New Mexico

"I had gone to high school in Denver, Colo., which isn't a breeding ground for college baseball schools to go look at you, and I had a friend go to New Mexico who talked to the coach and they extended an offer and it was a good place to play with a good program so that's where I ended up going."

On the MLB Draft process

"Definitely not as I had hoped it would have gone. I am sure you looked and I was drafted late. I had gotten hurt my junior year and missed significant time and maybe that hurt my draft stock or maybe not, I'm not sure. It was nail-biting because going on the 3rd day, your opportunities seem to be running out, but Cleveland fortunately gave me an opportunity and that was all I needed. Cleveland's interest came out of nowhere to be honest. They were not a team I talked to or for that matter did I know even saw me. They did and I was thankful. I was listening to the draft on MLB.com and I was over just waiting for the call so I turned it off. I was home with my parents who were still listening, and we found out I was getting drafted in the 24th round by the Cleveland Indians."

On emotions he felt with the trade to the Mets

"Probably every emotion you can think of. I had just gotten off a flight and had a text from the Indians farm director asking to call him and I was running through my head the possibilities and being traded was definitely not what I thought could happen. But afterwards people start saying congratulations and you start to see the opportunities of being wanted by another organization like the Mets. Shock, awe, excitement, anxiety. You have to meet a bunch of new guys and get accustomed to a new system, but it's been a good thing."

On how the adjustment has gone since joining the Mets

"Definitely meeting new guys, new coaching staff, new facility, but baseball in itself is a language and it's spoken the same way everywhere you go. So, you meet people and you build relationships rather quickly."

A scouting report of himself as a player

"Not sure I have ever been asked that. My best tool is my speed, I am fast and can run the bases well and steal a lot of bases. The other part of my game is that I am versatile, I have gotten time at 5 positions this year and I take pride in trying to do well at every one of them. At the plate I am going to battle for you and give you everything I have."
