Mets 1B Pete Alonso told reporters Monday that he got into a "brutal car accident" on Sunday, during which his car flipped over three times.

"Thankful to be alive," the slugger said at spring training in Port St. Lucie.

"Guy ran a red light and T-boned me. I’m just really thankful to be alive, really thankful to be healthy, really thankful to be here. It’s just anything can happen at any given moment, and I’m just super, super blessed to be here.

"This is just really special to be there, really special spring training because yesterday was a really close experience to death."

Alonso added that he had to kick the windshield out while his car was upside down. He also mentioned how much his wife, Haley, helped, as she was in a car behind him.

"She kinda rushed out of the car," he explained. "She was behind me and pretty much she called the police immediately. She corralled the dogs and got people to help because she didn’t know if I could get out of the car or not, because the windshield was really cracked.

"I'm just really happy my wife sprung into action when she did. She was a trouper yesterday.”

Luckily, Alonso said that "everyone is OK" and obviously he was able to make it to Clover Park to get his work in during his first day at spring training. He was able to hit and take ground balls without any problems.

"I'm just happy to be here," he said.
