In the weeks before the trade deadline, the Mets and Padres were quietly discussing a potential deal for Noah Syndergaard, according to people with direct knowledge of those talks.
The teams could not agree on Syndergaard's value, and the discussions fizzled by the final weekend of July. But this is worth bookmarking for the offseason, when the Mets could revisit the idea of moving Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom.
For all the interest in those pitchers, there aren't many teams with both the will to pull off a big trade, and the farm system to make it work. The Yankees are one, but believe that the Mets would never send them a top player.
The Padres, who have the top-ranked farm system in baseball, could easily assemble a package to trade for any star player -- and have already shown an interest in adding a top-of-the-rotation pitcher. In addition to checking in with the Mets about Syndergaard, San Diego was engaged with the Rays on Chris Archer, before Archer went to Pittsburgh.
From the Mets side, the current sense is that Wheeler is the most available, Syndergaard could be had for a high price, and deGrom is by far the least likely to move.
