Jacob deGrom was penciled to start his fourth consecutive Opening Day for the Mets, but a shoulder injury has sidelined the perennial Cy Young candidate for weeks. The Mets acquired Scherzer in free agency to be their No. 2, and with the injury to deGrom it seemed like a no-brainer to have him slide into the Opening Day role.

However, Scherzer tweaked a hamstring last week and the start of the season for him is in doubt. Tuesday will be the day to see if Scherzer’s hamstring feels better and Showalter already has a plan for every possibility.

“[Scherzer] can conceivably pitch [Opening Day], but that’s still being debated by other people,” Showalter said when asked what would happen if Scherzer had a good side session. “I’m not. I know where I would pitch him.”

Showalter remained coy on the plans, but he divulged that Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker will continue their scheduled routine for the end of spring training and, along with Chris Bassitt, are in line to pitch Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“I’m not going to disrupt the whole rotation when there’s a bump here. If there’s a double bump then you have to move some things,” Showalter said. “We’ve got some internal stuff and we’ll have a big enough bullpen with the roster expansion. We’ll be able to pitch in a lot of different directions.”

Showalter said that in the worst case scenario, ie. Scherzer is unable to pitch for a time, he won’t necessarily do a bullpen game, but fill the roster with pitchers who already have a starting background. Tylor Megill, Trevor Williams and David Peterson are all possibilities according to Showalter.
