The Mets beefed up their bullpen by acquiring right-hander Ryne Stanek in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Friday, and it sounds like more reinforcements could be on the way soon.
According to manager Carlos Mendoza, righty Reed Garrett “felt good” following his second bullpen session, and the skipper confirmed that Garrett will face live hitters on Wednesday before potentially starting a rehab assignment on Friday.
“He’s getting there,” Mendoza said. “It was good to see him get on the mound. He threw all of his pitches, the fastball was really good, and the biggest thing was he felt good. So, he’ll face hitters Wednesday, and then two days later, hopefully, he’s on a rehab assignment. That’s a good sign there.”
Mendoza said that the Mets will have to see how Garrett, who was placed on the IL on July 10 with right elbow inflammation, responds to facing live hitters before the club can determine a potential return date for the 31-year-old.
Sean Reid-Foley starts his rehab assignment
Fellow right-hander Sean Reid-Foley began his rehab assignment on Sunday, pitching for the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones.
Reid-Foley pitched the top of the sixth inning for Brooklyn in their matchup with Rome, and after getting the first two outs easily, he wasn’t able to finish the frame.
After a lineout and a groundout, Reid-Foley allowed a single, a steal, a walk, and then a two-run single to Kevin Kilpatrick Jr.
With his pitch count at 23 (13 strikes), Reid-Foley was pulled. In all, he was charged with two earned runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Reid-Foley has been on the IL since June 22 due to a right shoulder impingement, but he’s been terrific this season when healthy, pitching to a 1.66 ERA in 23 games.
