Mets manager Buck Showalter spoke with reporters on Monday.
Here are the key takeaways...
Eduardo Escobar to play some left field
Escobar, who will soon leave the Mets to join Team Venezuela for the World Baseball Classic, will soon play left field.
"Escobar is probably gonna play left field tomorrow or in the near future," Showalter said. "Venezuela wants to play him in left field some. Gonna get him a game out there. it may be on the back field."
Showalter added that Escobar playing left for Venezuela would only be in an emergency, quipping "that means he'll play [there]."
Escobar has played 45 games in the outfield during his career (29 starts) but hasn't done so since 2017.
In the event Escobar played left field and was comfortable, the Mets would conceivably have the option of using him there at times this season, potentially with Brett Baty at third base. But again, Escobar's left field exposure right now is being termed as simply prep for his role with Venezuela.
Justin Verlander's spring training debut set
Verlander will make his first start of spring training on Saturday when the Mets face the Miami Marlins on the road.
Max Scherzer, who made his first start on Sunday, will pitch again on Friday when the Mets host the Washington Nationals on SNY.
Mark Canha will soon play center field
Canha, who played 11 games in center field last season (seven starts), is expected to start a game out there soon.
The Mets' backup center field role has not been set, and Canha is an option along with Tommy Pham and Tim Locastro.
However, Locastro -- who is on a minor league deal -- might have a tough hill to climb when it comes to making the Opening Day roster.
