When the Mets were hot in August but not in playoff position, the Indians -- who were riding high at the time -- took a shot at the "fringe" playoff team Mets on Twitter before the final game of a three-game series at Citi Field that New York swept.

Some Mets players didn't take too kindly to that (see the full exchanges below) and one of those players (Noah Syndergaard) hasn't forgotten about it.

And with the Indians joining the Mets on the sidelines in October after having fallen apart down the stretch to wind up missing the playoffs by 3.0 games, Syndergaard took a fair parting shot.

"Oh and @Indians," he tweeted Sunday night. "Looks like we're both fringe playoff teams."

During the initial exchange in August, the Indians tweeted a message to their fans that also contained what some saw as a dig at the Mets.

"We didn't erase an 11.5-game deficit to roll over. We split a series with one of the best teams in MLB at their home ballpark," part of the tweet said. "We lost the last 2 to a fringe postseason team."

It's a long season.

Syndergaard and Marcus Stroman hit back at Cleveland after New York wrapped up their three-game sweep.

"We got some FRINGE for you right here, we call it a SWEEP in NYC. #LFGM," Noah Syndergaard tweeted while quote tweeting the Indians' original "fringe playoff team" tweet.

Stroman then quote tweeted Syndergaard to hammer home the point.
