Nick Madrigal, a utility infielder who came into camp with a good chance of making the Mets out of spring training, suffered a fractured left shoulder in Sunday’s split-squad game against the Washington Nationals.

According to manager Carlos Mendoza, an MRI revealed the fracture, but Madrigal will undergo further imaging to determine the next steps.

"Obviously, it’s going to keep him out for a long time," Mendoza said on Monday.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning and a run already home for the Nats, Luis Garcia Jr. hit a slow roller off the mound. Madrigal charged from his shortstop position, and threw awkwardly to first base. With his momentum carrying him towards home plate, Madrigal fell to the ground as he threw to first.

SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino had reported Sunday that if the injury were serious, which it is, the club expected to replace him internally.

Mendoza confirmed as much on Monday, saying the team is comfortable with the other options they have in camp.

"Right now, with [Luisangel] Acuña, with Donovan [Walton], he will start getting more action at short, and then we’ll see where we are with Brett [Baty]. As of now, I don’t have him penciled to play shortstop any time soon," Mendoza said. "He will continue to get his reps when necessary at short, but yeah, we still feel good with what we have."
