The Mets' Opening Day game against the Nationals has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns with the Nats and ongoing contact tracing.
"Out of an abundance of caution, the game will not be made up on Friday," MLB added in a statement. If they will play this weekend has not yet been decided or announced.
The teams had been scheduled to play at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on Thursday at 7:09 p.m., while Friday was a scheduled off-day.
The Mets and Nationals had been scheduled to play on Saturday and Sunday, and the initial expectation after the first positive case had been that the teams could play Saturday, but that now seems in doubt due to more positive cases.
Nationals GM Mike Rizzo announced on Thursday evening that two additional players have tested positive, bringing their total to three cases with a fourth positive case still possible.
Rizzo also said that he's "not sure" if the Nationals and Mets will be able to play this weekend, as "extensive contact tracing continues."
Per Rizzo, the entire Nationals team is now self-quarantining.
The Mets, who worked out at Nationals Park on Tuesday, do not have any COVID issues.
