After signing with the Mets on a cheap one-year deal this offseason, Luis Severino closed out his tremendous spring on a very high note on Sunday afternoon.

Taking the mound in his final tune-up before the regular season, Severino cruised through five innings of one-run ball while striking out four in New York’s commanding 10-1 win over the Nationals at Clover Park.

After opening the game by striking out CJ Abrams on a 97 mph fastball, the right-hander worked quickly and efficiently through the Washington lineup, needing just six pitches to get through the second.

Severino ran into some trouble in the third, as he hit Lane Thomas with a pitch to put two on and two out, but he quickly settled down as Jesse Winker flew out to shallow center to help him dance out of danger.

Following an easy fourth, he issued a leadoff walk and ran into some trouble in the fifth, but the right-hander quickly settled down again and rebounded nicely to end his afternoon allowing just one run on an RBI groundout.

“It was another good outing from him,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “I thought the fastball was really good today, he attacked and had swings and misses from the pitch, and the cutter and slider were good.

“That last inning, he had the leadoff walk. But then he came back and I think he touched 98, and he was able to get through five innings on 70 pitches, which was good to see. He’s excited with where he’s at, physically and mentally, heading into the season.”

Severino certainly has reason to be excited. He’s looked as confident and comfortable as ever during spring training.

After struggling mightily during his final year with the Yankees, the 30-year-old was fantastic this spring, allowing just two runs on nine hits while issuing one walk and striking out 12 across five appearances.

Most importantly, though, Severino is healthy entering his orange and blue debut next weekend against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field.

“I feel really good,” he said. “I was talking to Mendy and I was saying it feels good to finally find a routine that keeps me on the field. I’m working on a lot of different things, but I'm throwing strikes and the breaking pitches look good.

“I’m just excited to go to New York and to show everyone what we can do.”
