As the Mets enter spring training this week, we've got some important news updates.

Uniform number updates and changes, to be specific.

Reporters were in the team's spring training locker room on Monday and The Athletic's Tim Britton had the update: new Mets pitcher Rick Porcello will wear No. 22, the same one he wore during his time with the Red Sox.

But infielder Dominic Smith was previously wearing that number for the Mets. Smith has now evidently switched to No. 2.

Prior to Smith, that number was last worn by infielder Joe Panik last season. However, Gavin Cecchini, who played four games with the Mets in 2016, then another 32 in 2017 was wearing No. 2 prior to that. Smith debuted with the big club in 2017, so he couldn't select the single digit then.

But Smith has worn No. 22 for an extended time anyway, dating back to at least his high school days, as a photo shows in the Los Angeles Sentinel.

So one of two situations played out: Porcello either really wanted the number and paid up which is often the case in pro sports, or Smith just really was laid back about it all and just agreed to switch.
