The Mets are reportedly considering signing free agent utility player Marwin Gonzalez.

According to Fancred Sports' Jon Heyman, the team has "talked about" the 29-year-old Gonzalez, as GM Brodie Van Wagenen considers infielders who can play multiple positions.

Gonzalez has played the majority of his seven-year career with the Astros at shortstop, but has seen a fair bit of the outfield lately. This past season he started 65 games in left field while adding appearances at each infield position.

Gonzalez put together his best season in 2017, helping Houston win a World Series with 23 home runs, 90 RBI and a .303/.377/.733 slash line in the regular season.

He followed it up 16 homers, 68 RBI and a .237/.324/.409 line in 2018.

Van Wagenen has been open about his desire to see prospect Peter Alonso take over at first base early this season, but Gonzalez could potentially fill in there. With Robinson Cano now at second and the Mets reluctant to trade shortstop Amed Rosario, that leaves third base with Todd Frazier and the option of Jeff McNeil.

Gonzalez would be a good bat off the bench, but he's due for a raise after making $5.125 million last season.

As far as the outfield, the Mets have been pursuing free agent A.J. Pollock to potentially put in center field between Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto. The Mets, however, do have some competition for Pollock.
