The Mets have hired Danny Barnes as an assistant coach, manager Buck Showalter said on Friday.

Barnes, a 32-year-old native of Manhasset, NY, pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2016 to 2018, spent time in the Baltimore Orioles' minor league system in 2020, and pitched for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League last season.

According to Showalter, Barnes' role will be multifaceted.

"He's played in the big leagues, knows his way around the major league locker room," Showalter said. "He'll help everybody ... Just an assistant major league coach. We didn't get too titled up ... He can do a little bit of everything.

"He's got a great skill set ... We were looking for somebody to fit that role and Danny fit it perfectly. He's got a very bright future in the game. We were lucky to get him."

As far as the rest of the coaching staff, Glenn Sherlock will be the bench coach, Eric Chavez is the hitting coach, Jeremy Hefner is back as pitching coach, Joey Cora will be the third base coach, and Wayne Kirby the first base coach. The bullpen coach will be Craig Bjornson, while Jeremy Barnes will serve as the assistant hitting coach.
