Cameron Maybin now shares one of the most inauspicious records in Mets history.
Maybin went 0-for-3 in the second game of the Mets’ doubleheader sweep of the Colorado Rockies on Thursday and is now 0-for 26 in his eight games with the team.
Maybin has now tied the longest hitless streak a player has ever had to begin his tenure with the Mets, tying Charley Smith, who also started 0-for-26 during the 1964 season.
And it seems like Maybin just can’t buy a break right now. In his final at-bat Thursday, he laced a ball off of Jordan Sheffield with the bases load, but it deflected off of Ryan McMahon’s glove at third and bounced to shortstop Brendan Rodgers, who got the force play at the plate, giving Maybin a fielder’s choice.
Maybin has played a decent center field for the Mets since being acquired from the Cubs on May 18, and he’s currently one of the only healthy players who can man center.
The 34-year-old has always been a solid big league hitter, with a slash line of .254/.323/.374 over the course of his career.
But right now, it just seems like any ball he puts in play is hit right at someone.
Still, Maybin has been a part of this makeshift Mets lineup that, despite having 17 players on the IL, has won six out of 10 and find themselves 2.5 games up on the Phillies for first place in the NL East.
